Karnataka (Govt.) Polytechnic, Mangalore, popularly known as K.P.T. is the second largest polytechnic in Karnataka state started in the year 1946, is one among the prestigious institutions run by Government of Karnataka. It is the most accessible institute to the relatively weaker populace in coastal Karnataka region. The Institution is located in a sprawling campus of 19 acres. The institute is rendering0 yeomen service to the citizens of Mangalore and surrounding areas through engineering education. Karnataka (Govt.) Polytechnic, Mangalore was started in the year 1946 under the erstwhile Madras state government in a rented building at Pandeshwar. The Polytechnic started functioning at its present campus in Kadri Hills, Mangalore from 1954. The institute is well connected by a network of roads and conveniently situated in the heart of the city.


Mangalore is the Port city of Karnataka and is situated on the west coast and is the administrative headquarters of the Dakshina Kannada district in southwestern Karnataka. The city is developing fast in all directions viz. in the field of education, industry and commerce. The city is located in the confluence of Nethravati and Gurupura Rivers. It is bound in the east by the Western Ghats and in the west by the Arabian Sea. Three national highways viz. NH17 ing Panvel and Kanyakumari, NH48 ing Mangalore and Bangalore, NH13 ing Mangalore and Solapur pass through the city. The city is well connected by rail through Konkan Railway. A domestic airport is located at Bajpe which is 15 KM from the city. Mangalore is one of the industrially fastest growing cities in the region with Mangalore refineries and petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL), Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL), Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited (MCF), software giant Infosys are some to mention. The Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is developing the infrastructure and is certain to give a big boost to the industrial activities in the region. The rapid spurt in the industrial activities has opened a vast horizon of activities for the Polytechnic.


The polytechnic is the nodal polytechnic in the region. Academic activities of the 5 polytechnics, 4 aided polytechnics and 5 private polytechnics in the region are coordinated by Karnataka (Govt.) Polytechnic. This Polytechnic is the nodal centre for admission to the 5 government and 4 aided polytechnics in the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts.


At present, the Polytechnic is wholly run by the Government of Karnataka and comes under the purview of Directorate of Technical Education. This is a highly reputed institution and is a recipient of various projects like Direct Central Assistance Scheme of Government of India / World Bank Aid for the development activities / State Government Finances / MODROBS from AICTE / Community development through Polytechnics / Up gradation of existing Polytechnics Scheme / Women’s Hostel from MHRD / CIICP / CCTEK etc.
